1. You (2018-Present)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2018-Present
Genre Psychological Thriller
Director Greg Berlanti & Sera Gamble
Star Cast Penn Badgley, Elizabeth Lail, Victoria Pedretti, Tati Gabrielle
Rating (IMDb) 7.7/10

Are you a sucker for romantic thrillers? You certainly haven’t seen any like ‘You’! This Netflix series is based on multiple Caroline Kepnes novels. Over its 4 seasons, this psychological thriller follows the life and action of Joe Goldberg, a seemingly mundane yet charming man. He falls in love with women, only to become obsessed with and manipulate them, leading to dire consequences.

The lead character is played by Penn Badgley, who has undoubtedly risen to super-stardom with his performances across the seasons. His stoic acting and crisp narration held me onto every word he said. I especially enjoyed Badgley’s strong voice on my JBL speakers that would give me gooseflesh every time he said the term “You” (if you know, you know ;))

This gripping, disturbing and engaging series reflects the dangers of oversharing social media presence. Not safe for work and certainly not safe for kids, this Netflix series is laced with sex, romance, drugs and alcohol. If you are in the mood to sit on the edge of your seat all through a series, ‘You’ is just what you need. It has stellar cliffhangers at the end of every episode that tempts you to watch the next one immediately! Curiosity killed the cat, and I finished this show in record time. If you want an edge-of-the-seat thriller, ‘You’ is one of the best series on Netflix!

2. Black Mirror (2011-Present)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2011–Present
Genre Anthology/Sci-Fi/Thriller
Director Multiple Directors
Star Cast Jon Hamm, Andrew Scott, Rupert, Everett
Rating (IMDb) 8.7/10

The threat of technology overuse and abuse has been showcased excellently in The Black Mirror. The title of this series is aptly given, thanks to the black mirror that holds the gaze of every human alive (read: smartphones)

From artificial intelligence to social media, climate change and augmented reality, Black Mirror showcases the perils of the modern world. Each episode is independent of the other, building on a concept that finally unravels a shocking end. Black Mirrors boasts of an entourage of celebrated actors who make every episode worth watching. Some compelling stories left me thinking and worrying deep into the night. Even my most comfortable The Sleep Company mattress took a while to usher me into a deep slumber after watching the impactful stories of Black Mirror.

Be Right Back, a story in season 2 about a technology that allows you to get in touch with the deceased, will undoubtedly run chills down your spine. Another acclaimed story from Black Mirror season 1 is Fifteen Million Credits, where the entire world runs on people riding bikes to gain credits. Daunting and thought-provoking, Black Mirror leaves viewers facing the gory reality of today and the imminent dangers of the future.

The sixth season of Black Mirror was released on Netflix in June 2023. It boasts a star cast that includes Salma Hayek, Annie Murphy and Aaron Paul. It showcases different stories of a dystopian future. It is the best series on Netflix if you are a technology buff and enjoy shows with a firm imagination flex.

3. The Queen’s Gambit (2020)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2020
Genre Historical Drama
Director Scott Frank
Star Cast Anya Taylor-Joy, Thomas Brodie, Harry Melling
Rating (IMDb) 8.6/10

An intriguing tale of genius, addiction and history, this fictional story is about a chess prodigy and her journey to becoming the best chess player in the world.

The Queen’s Gambit is a visual delight for anybody who loves chess. Beth Harmon is an orphan who discovered her love and gift for chess through a chance game. From there on, the story tracks her many successes and pitfalls. This show is set in the 1960s in the US, around the Cold War era. It beautifully captures the nuances of the time through costumes, dialogue and more.

Anya Taylor-Joy does full justice to the leading role and held my interest throughout the series. This show has won several accolades ranging from Golden Globe to Emmy Awards, all with good reason. If you are an avid chess enthusiast, this is one show you shouldn’t miss. Even if you aren’t an avid chess enthusiast, this show will make you one! Just make sure you get your hands on a chess board from Hamleys so you can replicate all the chess tricks the show teaches you!

I watched this show with my 16-year-old nephew, and he has become a keen chess learner ever since. So if you want to introduce anyone to the chess game and pique their interest, this show is the best way to do it! Just make sure they are 15 years and above, as this show has scenes of abuse, addiction and sexual reference.

4. Squid Game (2021-Present)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2021-Present
Genre Thriller
Director Hwang Dong-hyuk
Star Cast Lee Jung-Jae, Gong Yoo, HoYeon Jung
Rating (IMDb) 8/10

No list of ‘The Best Series To Watch On Netflix’ can be complete without Squid Game. This Korean show boasts the highest viewership on Netflix ever, and with good reason! This one-of-a-kind story is about a group of people invited to participate in a survival game in an unknown location.

Every step of the game has a fatal consequence, where the lone survivor emerges victorious and walks away with a cash prize. The story’s protagonist is riddled with high debt, played by Lee Jung-Jae, who walks into the game to win the prize money but is faced with twists and turns that make your heart skip a beat ever so often! Watch it for the insinuations of class divide, politics, the tussle between the rich and the poor and some good ol’ entertainment.

Although the English dubbing done by Netflix isn’t top-notch, Squid Game became a global sensation in no time. Invest in the boAt wired subwoofer and Bluetooth soundbar to negate the average quality dubbing and ensure you hear the dialogues crystal clear. These accessories integrate with your television to give you pure sound quality, speaking from personal experience.

The second season is much awaited and is sure to break global viewership records. I, for one, am eagerly waiting for the second season of this show, and I’m sure it will be a masterclass act just like the first one.

5. Bridgerton (2020 – Present)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2020-Present
Genre Romance
Director Chris Van Dusen
Star Cast Rege- Jean Page, Jonathan Bailey, Phoebe Dynevor
Rating (IMDb) 7.4/10

This typical English drama set in the Regency period in England will transport you to a different world. One of the most-watched Netflix series in India and the world over, Bridgerton is the story of the family by the same name. The family consists of eight siblings, and the story follows each of their journeys. This show is inspired by a series of novels focusing on each Bridgerton sibling’s navigation through love, marriage, relationships, society, scandal and more.

The first season and the second season were welcomed with rave reviews. Capitalizing on the success of Bridgerton, Netflix even rolled out a prequel to the entire series called Queen Charlotte – A Bridgerton Romance.

Bridgerton season 3 is all set for a late 2023 release, and no prizes for guessing; it is going to be just as engaging as the previous two seasons.

I have a personal connection with Bridgerton. The show’s locales, gardens, lavish mansions and parklands are so breathtakingly beautiful that I decided to travel to the UK soon after watching the show. Thankfully, this sudden travel plan fell in place monetarily and logistically thanks to Goibibo.com flights, where I got great deals on flight bookings. So, Bridgerton will always hold a special place in my heart as it was the sole reason I planned a trip to the UK.

6. Tooth Pari: When Love Bites (2023)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2023
Genre Fantasy
Director Pratim D Gupta
Star Cast Tanya Maniktala, Shantanu Maheshwari, Tillotama Shome, Revathi
Rating (IMDb) 7/10

Undoubtedly one of the top Netflix Hindi shows of 2023, Tooth Pari is an eerie and intriguing story of a vampire with a broken tooth who falls in love with a shy dentist. Set in the beautiful city of Kolkata, this fantasy series gripped my attention.

Tooth Pari makes it to my list of the best shows on Netflix because of the broad spectrum of amazing performances. Whether Tanya Maniktala, the ravishing Revathi or the spectacular Tillotama Shome, the entire series is carried seamlessly on their top-quality performances. Each character in Tooth Pari is so nuanced and well-written that you are immersed in the story from the word go.

This show proves India is finally ready to own the Fantasy fiction genre. The Twilight Saga inspires Tooth Pari. However, it is disappointing that no Indianness was added to the plot, which could have scored some brownie points with the audience.

All the emphasis on dental care got me more proactive about my dental health, leading me to try the Thermoseal Dental Gel I ordered from ClickOnCare. This gel has made a world of difference to my oral sensitivity and helps prevent cavities.

The story is sprinkled with some humour, satire and charm. In its endeavour to humanize vampires, this series makes for a fun, light-hearted watch. It wouldn’t be half as captivating if it weren’t for the likes of Revathy, Adil Hussain and even Sikandar Kher, who have done a fine job as the supporting cast.

7. Stranger Things (2016 – Present)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Release Year 2016 – Present
Genre Drama
Director Duffer Brothers
Star Cast FinnWolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo
Rating (IMDb) 8.7/10

This retro sci-fi series has won the hearts of viewers of all ages. Inspired by the way of storytelling in the 80s, this story is set in the same period. So, it takes Generation X and Millenials down memory lane with the iconic pop references. Anyone who grew up watching Speilberg, Craven or Lucas will certainly dig this show. It is no surprise then that Stranger Things is one of the most popular Netflix series in India today among all age groups.

Stranger Things is the story of some school friends who delve into “the upside-down” and all its extra-dimensional creatures, including the much-famed Demogorgon, when one of the kids goes missing. This show has a bit of horror, thrill, drama, humour and romance sprinkled around. A thorough entertainer you can watch with your teenager, Stranger Things has become a cult classic. Stranger Things has four seasons, with a fifth expected to hit our screens in 2025. Unfortunately, that will be the last instalment of this iconic show. I’m sure more than half the population on Earth can wait for that, just like me!

The iconic Stranger Things soundtrack has won hearts just like the show. The soundtrack is best heard on top-quality speakers or soundbars you can quickly get on the Amazon India website. I love the soundtrack so much I even have it on Spotify on my smartphone to give it a listen whenever I like.

8. Seinfeld (1989-1998)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 1989-1998
Genre Sitcom
Director Larry David & Jerry Seinfeld
Star Cast Larry David, Jerry Seinfeld, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Michael Richards
Rating (IMDb) 8.9/10

This comedy show is about nothing, yet it is about everything we can relate to in our lives! Shot three decades back, Seinfeld is relevant even to the modern binge-watcher.

It follows the life of Jerry Seinfeld, a stand-up comic, and his friends, neighbours and colleagues. Jerry, in my opinion, is the one that ushered the cult of stand-up comedy into my life. Many viewers compare Seinfeld to Friends and laud the former for being more critically acclaimed. Seinfeld is often called the intelligent man’s comedy show and for good reason.

I love how relatable this show is to our lives’ minor inconveniences and quirks. From pulling all office jobs to dealing with over-friendly exes, this classic comedy is my go-to when I want clean fun.

Apart from all of this, Seinfeld brought out feelings of empathy in its audiences, teaching us to be better humans and improve our lives. Total points to this show for reaching out to the heart and the mind (and our funny bone too!)

9. The Crown (2016-Present)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2016-Present
Genre Historical drama
Director Peter Morgan
Star Cast Claire Foy, Olivia Morgan, Matt Smith, Imelda Stauton
Rating (IMDb) 8.6/10

Are you a sucker for all things royal? Then The Crown must be on your watchlist on Netflix. This series tracks the life of Queen Elizabeth II, beginning from her reign in the 1940s to modern times. Based on the stage play “The Audience” that won several accolades, The Crown has taken the legacy forward and how!

This Netflix original is packed with powerful performances from Olivia Colman, Claire Foy and Matt Smith, among others, making it gripping and engaging from the word go. It touches upon several historical happenings in the UK in the 20th century. As a history buff, I loved reliving those events from the view of the royals.

The upcoming season of The Crown is easily my most awaited show. Elizabeth Debicki slips into the skin of Princess Diana effortlessly, and we are all waiting to see the portrayal of our favourite princess yet again on the big screen. You can’t deny that Emma Corrin, too, perfectly captured the charisma of Princess Diana in season 4, making all of us want to take our wardrobe and appearance up a notch! After ogling at her wardrobe in the last season, I guilt-shopped those beautiful suits and skirts from Marks & Spencer.

The Crown is indeed the crowning glory of all Netflix shows for any and every fan of the royal family! It is a popular Netflix show in India right now, all thanks to the buzz for the sixth and supposedly final instalment of this absolute gripper of a series! Those who haven’t watched The Crown are now catching up with the earlier seasons to get geared up for season six.

10. Never Have I Ever (2020-2023)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2020-2023
Genre Drama
Director Minda Kaling & Lang Fisher
Star Cast Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, Darren Barnet, Poorna Jagannathan
Rating (IMDb) 7.9/10

Never Have I Ever is an ode to the NRIs of India who move overseas and build a life there, with all its struggles and triumphs. Written by the sassy Mindy Kaling, this show draws inspiration from her own experiences as a teenage Indian American.

A fun romantic sitcom, Never Have I Ever is one of the most popular Netflix series in India today among the Gen Z. It is centred around Devi and her three years of high school. From friendships to romance and family dynamics, this show covers all the emotions and experiences that teenagers go through.

This show boasts a stellar star cast, including Poorna Jagannathan and Mindy Kaling. It is a coming-of-age teenage drama you can watch with your parents, kids, grandparents – basically every age group! It is the perfect binge-watch for those lazy Sundays when you only want to lie down on a comfortable sofa from Pepperfry and binge-watch your day away!

All in all, this is the best Netflix original series right now in teenage drama and rom-com. I recently overheard many kids in my neighbourhood comparing their college struggles to Devi’s! Well, suffice it to say this show has struck a chord with viewers in India and overseas!

11. Breaking Bad (2008-2013)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2008-2013
Genre Drama
Director Vine Gilligan
Star Cast Bryan Cranston, Anna Gunn, Aaron Paul
Rating (IMDb) 9.5/10

Breaking Bad is the highest-rated show on iMDB, and with good reason! This American crime drama starts slow and mundane, making you wonder what all the fuss is about. Before you know it, the unbeatable combination of comedy, drama, and crime is so engaging that you binge-watch to know what happens next!

Breaking Bad is considered a masterpiece in drama, storytelling and character development. It is amazing how a regular chemistry school teacher becomes a badass meth supplier and takes on the biggies of the crime world. The characters’ complexities come out perfectly, from Bryan Cranston’s stoic acting as Walter White to Aaron Paul’s quirky portrayal of Jesse Pinkman. In the beginning, you feel sympathy for Cranston’s character. By the end, you see him consumed in greed, cruelty and his ultimate downfall.

This show is all about chemistry, but it is not just the subject of chemistry but the chemistry the two male leads share. Their off-screen friendship is evident on-screen, taking their performances and camaraderie to the next level. The comic rapport between Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston is the stuff of legend. In my opinion, that’s what made all the difference in the show.

As I progressed through the seasons of this show, I got engaged in the subject of Chemistry. I began reading so much about it, all thanks to the excellent collection of books from Repro Books. Dare I say I can be the next Walter White!

12. Suits  (2011-2019)

Best Series on Netflix to Watch

Released Year 2011-19
Genre Drama
Director Aaron Korsh
Star Cast Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Meghan Markle
Rating (IMDb) 8.4/10

All my sass, style and personality I learned way back in the day from this stellar show. Suits is a legal drama about a brilliant law school dropout who a top-ranking New York firm hires. The famed Harvey Specter is the mentor who is one of the most stylish and sophisticated characters to have ever been on my television screen. Every time I watch this show (yes, I have binge-watched it three times), I find myself shopping for those stylish suits (pun intended) and formal ties from Louis Philippe.

Suits have enjoyed a mighty run of 9 seasons. This show stars Patrick J Adams and Gabriel Macht in leading roles, both stellar actors. The show revolves around their relationship and camaraderie. The ‘bromance’ between these two characters sets the tone for the entire show. It also stars Meghan Markle and is undoubtedly one of her best works.

If you want to develop some quick wit and learn the basics of smartness and style, I recommend watching Suits.
